βMat put in a convincing performance to take first place in The Fibonacci Event at The CrossFit Games. He fought off a chase from Pat Vellner to take the win.
Fibonacci Event
For time:
5-8-13 reps of:
Parallette handstand push-ups
Double kettlebell deadlifts
Then, lunge 89 ft. with 2 kettlebells overhead
M 14-in. deficit, 2 203-lb. KB for deadlifts, 2 53-lb. KB for lunges
F 8-in. deficit, 2 124-lb. KB for deadlifts, 2 35-lb. KB for lungesβ
Kettlebell Krusher’s Take:
Just to clarify the reps for the competition, each exercise is repeated that number of times before cycling to the next set. So 5 handstand push-ups and 5 double kettlebell deadlifts. That then increases to 8 handstand-ups and 8 deadlifts before the last set of 13 each. The final task is to lunge to the finish line with 2 kettlebells overhead.
Looking at the male and female kettlebell weights, I did a double-take at the reported weight for the deadlifts. Yes, it is two 203-lb kettlebells for men and two 124-lb kettlebells for women. I find that to be very impressive. As a guy who is slowly working his way up to heavier kettlebells (I’m only at a measly 25-lb kettlebell now!), I can only imagine the excellent condition these male and female athletes are in. I know deadlifts aren’t the most taxing of kettlebell exercises, but they aren’t usually performed in such a strenuous set and on that large of a scale.
Kettlebell Size Comparison
Notice the difference between the two as it pertains to the handle and base of the kettlebells? It is almost comical seeing a base wider than a handle! Of course, they aren’t competition kettlebells, since they are made of iron and not the same dimensions. Considering the largest competition kettlebell you can find typically maxes out at 104 lbs., it makes sense they are of the traditional variety.
